God bless the broken road
i’m feeling pretty raw right now. a couple days ago, i wrote a piece that’s now live on huffington post:
remembering jay on memorial day
today is memorial day and i just watched ‘the view’.
the last segment of today’s show featured 4troops, a group of veterans who formed a singing group. they performed rascall flatt’s “bless the broken road”.
i don’t know when i first heard that song, but that was one of my jay songs. so between writing my latest huffington post piece (which i hadn’t planned on doing) and then today being memorial day and then hearing veterans sing “bless the broken road”, i was feeling pretty overwhelmed with emotions.
all the best on memorial day.

unintentionally, but understandably, offensive writing
last night, i was having trouble sleeping, so i started writing. i wrote a new piece last night, edited it a few times today and then posted it this evening. i’m not sure when it will go live but as soon as it does, i’ll add it here.
i’m a little worried that the piece might really offend some people. well, writing does that because thoughts do that because people do that. nonetheless, sometimes you speak your truth and it offends and that’s how it is. i can understand if this piece offends some people, although that’s not my goal at all. i still felt like sharing it, so i’m putting it out there. let’s see how it goes.

rondo alla turca
you classical musicians have probably heard of it. rondo alla turca is one of mozart’s songs. I used to fly through it. in fact, I used to think I played it pretty damn well.
‘used to’ are the operative words. I just tried to play it for the first time in years. wow. it’s crazy and defintely humbling to hear myself clunking through the notes – slowly, riddled with errors, sometimes trying to instinctively remember what I used to play. ( Read more )

“suicide’s note”
so, i just posted a new piece on psychology today. it is the final part of my 3-piece feature: the sad & the glad about depression and suicide. it’s another ‘put up the piece at lunch’ thing. fortunately, i’d already written it, so i just needed to format it properly and add appropriate pictures. shape’s shape
jezebel says it wonderfully:
Shape, continues to be one of those pseudo-fitness magazines that claims to be all about “women’s health” but is, in actuality, all about weight loss.
nothing more needs to be said.

why i write
I had a conversation w/ someone today who shared with me their struggles with food. the person had seen some of the pieces I’d written. I felt honored and humbled that the person shared with me.
one thing it reminded me is why I write. ( Read more )

tsk tsk rebecca minkoff
le sigh. i have been a rebecca minkoff fan for years. i thought she and i had something going. when was the first time i drooled over a rebecca minkoff bag? who knows, maybe four years ago. i have two morning after minis and it takes a lot of self-restraint not to have bought more (steady, anyone?)

big lips
i saw this article: when “big lips don’t work:” the struggles of a black model, which i admit, i didn’t fully read (it’s near the end of lunch and i don’t have a lot of time). that said, i could relate to the topic. ( Read more )
