the impudence of “you”

i recently started reading william zinsser’s on writing well, and the last chapter i read was on unity.  normally, when i write, i have a tendency to mix “i,” “you,” and “we” liberally.  a point that zinsser’s was making that i thought made a lot of sense if that using so many forms can confuse the readers.

with that in mind, i incorporated a lot of those ideas in my latest psychology today piece, “combating the stigma of depression”. ( Read more )

alfalfa sprouts

al-fal-fa sprouts?? yes, alfalfa sprouts. at our company meeting today, we had food and i picked up one of the sandwiches, which was overloaded with [coleslaw? salad? i'm not sure].  i had some alfalfa sprouts in the fridge, so i garnished my food with it.

exponential hate

has it seemed that the level of hatred in the u.s. has significantly expounded?  i’ve been pondering that. i’ve been vacillating between whether i’m feeling increasingly paranoid or whether these feelings and instincts are justified.  for instance, there have been reports that there is 244% increase in militia groups in this country.  that is insane.  i get it – some white people are freaking out about having a black president.  their idea about what “their america” is feels threatened (gotta love when immigrants have the nerve to be indignant about “their country” changing.  fear leads to stupidity.  i understand that.  still… ( Read more )
