i just had an e-mail conversation with one of my best girlfriends. she and i became friends through an eating disorder support group, were really tight for years and then drifted apart. we recently reconnected. i just wanted to relay our conversation (w/out her name of course):

“my normal is this”
yay! happy post!
this is about the glamour magazine/”plus sized”* model whose tummy – the real tummy – not the taut, airbrushed enigma we usually see – was shown in the magazine.
not to say i told you so, but i’m not surprised that glamour did something like this. glamour and instyle are the only two female interest magazines** i’ve ever subscribed to (although i no longer subscribe to either) and one reason is because i felt comfortable giving my money to a company that made an effort to feature “normal-sized” women (or at least not overly emphasize rail-thin chicks).

diets on mondays
as i was fixing my breakfast, i started thinking about diet monday. my assumption (and i’m definitely making an assumption) is that more people are dieting on monday than any other day of the week, just because peeps see monday as a fresh start.
next, i realized that i couldn’t remember the last time i had a diet monday (or a diet sunday). perhaps i’m having selective memory. if i think really hard, i can probably remember some time in the not far past where i decided i’d “stop eating this” or “eat more of that” starting monday morning. but off the top of my head, i can’t remember that.

ignorance and truth
ignorance is bliss.
truth is freedom.
yet, i don’t believe freedom is misery. although it can be quite trying. and difficult.
freedom is better than ignorance. except when it’s not.
i guess it depends on the situation.

purging in movies
(note: this is what i’d wanted to write about)
i just caught a movie halfway through, and as it seemed like a somewhat interesting independent film, i debated whether or not to record it.
the part i caught involved three high school girls who were eating lunch in the cafeteria. i was surprised that they all seemed to be consuming regular food instead of things like salad and diet coke. i mean, after all, how often do we see a whole group of high school girls without one of them eating diet food?
a couple minutes later, they went to the bathroom. at first i thought they were there to fix their makeup or use the bathroom, but quickly realized no, they were about to purge. and then they went into the bathroom and barfed.
back in the day, i didn’t used to be as bothered by movies where chicks purged. ( Read more )
